The Making of Saw V

Saw V DVDSaw V was written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, and the film went into production after Christmas 2007. Principal photography took place from March 17, 2008 to April 28, 2008 in Toronto. A few photos of David Hackl on the set of Saw V were accessible by July. Comic-Con 2008 presented the first Saw V trailer. The trailer was likewise presented before The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The website opened on August 6, 2008. On September 17, 2008, a fresh clip was accessible on the Saw V website, portraying the Pendulum Trap.

Saw V Box Office Performance

Saw V was a box-office winner, grossing $30 million in its first weekend. But it was the first Saw film since the original that wasn't #1 at the box office on its premiere weekend. (High School Musical 3: Senior Year took the #1 spot the weekend Saw V came out.) And even though it was a winner, it was the least successful of the series so far, grossing over $113 million.

Saw V Reviews

Film critic Elizabeth Weizman of the New York Daily News believed that Tobin Bell's absence hurt the film: "Bell's deliciously twisted madman was the lifeline of this series, and without him, we're left watching a routine horror flick that might as well have gone straight to DVD. The series began with two major assets that set it apart: the concept of a brilliantly righteous executioner, and the actor who played him. Now, aside from Bell's brief, intermittent cameos, it has neither. So where the original Saw was diabolical fun, this fifth installment is as bloodless as the most unfortunate of Jigsaw's victims."

The film incurred generally unfavorable reviews from movie critics. Movie review website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 14% of film reviewers gave the movie positive reviews, making it the least well received picture in the Saw franchise. Metacritic reported that the motion picture had an mean grade of 19 out of 100, based on a dozen reviews.

Some reviews were positive, though. British website Digital Spy was relatively positive about the movie, scoring it 3/5 stars and praising the film for its "solid acting, slick direction and suitably filthy cinematography too", while also stating it will "make far more sense to those familiar with the previous installments".

IGN presented the movie with 3 out of 5 stars, saying that the picture ties up most of the loose ends of the earlier four episodes while also having a more transparent and less intricate storyline. IGN also praised the traps for being the most inventive and best that the Saw series has had to offer.

The DVD with the Directors Cut

Director David Hackl said that the directors cut would feature an extra 14 minutes of footage when contrasted with the theatrical edition of Saw V. He also said that several scenes would be re-ordered. But the extra footage was never published, and only a few limited changes were featured in the special edition.
