Scary DVDs
This is a list of scary DVDs you can watch. That's not exactly the same thing
as a list of horror DVDs, by the way, because not all horror movies are scary.
I've linked the title of each scary movie on DVD to a review of that movie by a
blogger that I'd like to support. If you enjoy reading blogs from real people
about horror movies, you should consider providing them with support in the way
of comments and links to their content from your sites, too.
-
Halloween (1978) - John Carpenter's masterpiece, the
original Halloween still has the power to frighten audiences even
30-something years later. The tepid Rob Zombie remake is better forgotten,
though.
-
Night
of the Living Dead (1968) - Some of Romero's other zombie movies
might get a little more play, but the original zombie movie creates such an
aura of isolation that it becomes truly disturbing.
-
The Exorcist (1973) - Isn't it funny how many movies on this
list are especially scary to parents of small children? You'll know what I
mean when you read through the rest of this list. Perhaps this says more
about the list-maker than it does about horror movies.
-
The Omen (1976) - What's scarier than the onset of the Biblical
apocalypse? The Omen is loaded with creepy scenes, and the music adds
to the horror.
-
Paranormal Activity (2007) - Most modern horror movies fail to
scare, but Paranormal Activity is a horror movie that delivers. You
might as well skip the sequels though.
-
Pet Sematary (1989) - Like When a Stranger Calls, which
is included later in this list, Pet Sematary is especially scary for
people who have children. It's not just scary, either. It's disturbing.
-
The Shining (1980) - Who knew that Stanley Kubrick had one of
the scariest horror movies of all time in him? I suppose people who saw A
Clockwork Orange had some idea.
-
The Thing (1982) - John Carpenter proved that he wasn't a
one-trick pony with this one. Halloween might be his masterpiece, but
The Thing is a more-than-worthy follow-up.
-
Videodrome (1983) - All of David Cronenberg's movies are
disturbing as well as scary, but he takes it to a whole other level with
Videodrome. Much of the credit must go to James Woods' excellent
performance.
-
When a Stranger Calls (1979) - This one is usually left off of
these kinds of lists, but it shouldn't be. It's especially scary if you have
children.
You can buy most of these scary DVDs on Amazon. Few of them are out of print
or even expensive. I found copies of Night of the Living Dead and The
Exorcist on DVD for less than $5. You can even get some of these on Blu-Ray
at really good prices. I found a copy of Halloween on Blu-Ray for less
than $10. Some of them are a little more expensive--the best price I could find
on The Omen DVD was $15.
